Life is rich with opportunities to stretch and learn. It is especially fun when you can create something to share with friends and family. Dan and I have finally learned how to make limoncello - a classic southern Italian libation that unknowingly packs a powerful punch, hidden behind that fresh, lemony taste. There is nothing like sipping limoncello on a hot night, when all around you is wilting from the summer heat.
For those ambitious to make it, get a hold of about 8 fresh lemons - preferably with a waxy rind. Peel the outermost rind, being careful to not remove any of the bitter pith. Steep the rinds in a large sealed jar, along with one bottle of Everclear (196 proof,) for about 10 days in a cool, dark place. Make sure to shake the mixture daily.
After 10 days, take the rinds out of the alcohol and drop them in 1 liter of boiling water. Turn off the heat, and add 1kg of sugar. Melt the sugar and then pour the sweet mixture in with the alcohol, straining out the liquid from the peels. Shake well and voilá, you have your hooch! Now here's a sure-fired way to make a difference - share with friends and family for a fabulous time...
...of course, always drink responsibly! :-)
