As a professional communicator, I am fascinated by words and expressions. Okay, I am a nerd - there, I said it (and ah, that must be why I love peeps like
Mel so much!). Anyways, I digress...My interest in language extends beyond the regular dictionary and thesaurus, proper usage and grammar. In fact, since language is in a constant state of flux, and especially with teenage kids, it is crucial to keep up with its evolution. Enter my new favorite resource: the
Urban Dictionary.
I subscribe to the "Urban Dictionary Word of the Day" and look forward to my daily dose of language delivered direct to my inbox.
Here, for your edification, are some of my recent learnings:
...to keep an eye out for my staff
homing from work (using work time and resources for personal tasks).
...to make sure to pack a
sando (sandwich) for lunch.
...that I grew up in Italy surrounded by
nut huggers (really tight jeans worn by a man)
...that I don't particularly enjoy
farticles (the particles of air contaminated after someone or something lets out gas)
...that this year I'ma gonna have a
staycation (a vacation spent at home enjoying all that home and the Bay Area have to offer)
...and that I must contain my
earlybirditude (the - often-annoying-to-others-who-don't-share-it - overly happy attitude of early birders - often associated with a great eagerness to call 7 am committee meetings or to get up at 5 am to work out).
You ask how I keep a healthy dialogue with my teens,
yarramean?
